Cultural Flags Initiative From Star Student

Glace Bay — Last week, Glace Bay High School’s bright atrium was awash in color, thanks to Grade 11 student Emily MacLean. Sporting her signature red GBHS tee, Emily proudly unveiled a new installation of international flags that now adorns the school’s central corridor. “I’ve always been fascinated by the stories each flag represents,” she told us, “and I wanted everyone here to feel seen and celebrated.”

Emily’s project began as a simple classroom idea—researching the diverse backgrounds of her classmates—but quickly grew into a full-school effort. She reached out to the parent council and local businesses for support, securing donations to print high-quality banners of over 20 nations. From Canada’s maple leaf to the vibrant stripes of the Philippines, each flag hangs above student lockers as a reminder of Glace Bay’s rich multicultural heritage.

Far from stopping at decoration, Emily is now launching a monthly “Global Exchange” club where students can share music, recipes, and stories from their family traditions. She’s already lined up guest speakers from the Cape Breton Multicultural Association and hopes to partner with the Glace Bay Public Library for a community potluck this fall. “Our town has always been close-knit,” Emily says, “and I can’t wait to make those connections even stronger through culture and conversation.”

Keep an eye on the Gazette for updates on Emily’s events—and be sure to stop by GBHS to see the flags fluttering in the hallway!
