New Community Walking Trail Opens in Reserve Mines

RESERVE MINES — Residents and local officials gathered on Thursday afternoon for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Reserve Mines Community Walking Trail—an inviting two-kilometre path encircling the north edge of Stanton Pond. Built on previously unused land, the trail was funded by a $100,000 municipal grant and a $50,000 contribution from the Reserve Mines Trail Association. The path features crushed gravel surfaces, benches at scenic overlooks, and a new footbridge spanning a small inlet of the pond.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Alan Sewell said, “This trail is a fantastic addition to our area. It’s a beautiful place for people of all ages to enjoy nature and stay active.” After the ribbon was cut, families, joggers, and dog walkers set out on the inaugural stroll, taking in views of the pond’s calm waters and the lush woodlands that border it.

Trail coordinator Serena MacDonald explained that the design prioritized accessibility: “The path is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, with gentle slopes and clear signage. We also included educational panels about local wildlife and the history of Reserve Mines to enrich the experience.” Informational kiosks along the trail highlight species such as painted turtles, great blue herons, and native wildflowers, encouraging visitors to learn as they walk.

Local running club members will hold weekly “Trail Tuesdays” starting July 1, offering guided group runs at 6:30 p.m. The Reserve Mines Trail Association has also announced monthly “Nature Walks” led by volunteer naturalist Dr. Peter Harvey, beginning July 5. These walks will focus on birdwatching and native plant identification.

As the sun began to set, children played near the shoreline while older residents settled onto benches to chat and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The trail is open daily from dawn until dusk, inviting neighbors to connect with nature just steps from home.
