Glace Bay Library Launches “Summer Reads” Program

GLACE BAY — The Glace Bay Library kicked off its annual “Summer Reads” program last Monday, welcoming dozens of children and families eager to dive into a summer of stories. Running from July 1 to August 31, the program encourages youth aged 5–15 to read at least five books over the summer months and earn prizes ranging from bookmarks and stickers to gift certificates donated by local businesses.

Librarian Samantha Reid noted that participation has tripled since 2023. “Last year, we had just over 100 kids sign up; this year, we’re already at 325 participants,” Reid said. “We’ve added a special focus on Indigenous authors and local history to celebrate Cape Breton’s rich cultural heritage.”

In addition to individual reading goals, the library is hosting weekly drop-in activities every Thursday: storytelling sessions, book-themed crafts, and author meet-and-greets. Special guest appearances include Marilynn MacLeod, author of the upcoming children’s novel Highland Whispers, on July 15, and Atlas Theatre’s “Storytellers of Nova Scotia” troupe performing Isle of Stories on August 5.

Parents like local resident Jamie O’Brien appreciate the program’s community-building aspect. “My son Michael has always loved comics, but now he’s branching out into longer chapter books—he’s pretty proud of that,” O’Brien remarked. Meanwhile, librarian volunteers are excited to help facilitate events and guide participants through book selections.

The Glace Bay Library encourages families to register at the circulation desk or online at www.glacebaylibrary.ca/summerreads. All registered participants will be invited to a celebratory ice cream party on September 2, where certificates and grand prizes—such as donated bicycles and reading kits—will be awarded.
