Donkin Legion to Host Annual Tulip Sale This Weekend

Donkin — Spring has sprung at the Donkin Legion, as volunteers prepare to kick off their much-anticipated annual Tulip Sale from Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8. Patrons can choose from dozens of vibrant tulip varieties—ranging from classic crimson and golden sunrise to rare bi-colored blends—right outside the Legion hall at 42 Legion Avenue. Proceeds from every bulb sold will go directly toward the Legion’s veterans’ support programs, including care packages for hospital visits and funding for local remembrance ceremonies.

Legion President Glenn MacNeil explains, “We’ve sold tulips here for over a decade. It’s become a treasured spring tradition in Donkin—folks know that by purchasing a few bulbs, they’re brightening their gardens and helping our veterans.” Volunteers spent Wednesday evening arranging hundreds of freshly delivered bulbs, carefully labeling each stem with planting instructions and variety names. “We have everything from early-blooming Triumphs to late-season Parrots,” says volunteer Joan Fraser. “Gardeners of all skill levels can find something beautiful—and easy—to grow.”

In addition to individual bulbs ($5 each) and six-packs ($25), the Legion is offering pre-arranged mixed bouquets ($18) and special “Veterans’ Tribute” planters ($45) that feature a selection of red, white, and purple tulips. On Saturday, members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary will serve coffee and homemade muffins on a donation basis, ensuring shoppers can enjoy a warm treat while selecting their tulips. “It’s always heartwarming to see entire families come by—grandparents picking out heirloom varieties, children eager to plant their very first flower,” Joan notes.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. The first 50 customers on Friday will receive a complimentary packet of heritage tulip seeds donated by Greenview Nurseries. “Our goal is to sell at least 1,500 bulbs this weekend,” Glenn adds. “That will cover the costs of next—year’s Remembrance Day wreaths and help send care packages to veterans recovering nearby. We’re grateful for every dollar returned to our community.”

For inquiries or bulk orders, call the Legion office at (902) 555-8123. Volunteers are also accepting in-kind garden supply donations—such as biodegradable pots and mulch—to help underwrite future Legion events.
