Teacher Joan MacLeod, Retires After 35 Years of Service

Dominion — After an inspiring thirty-year career nurturing generations of students, Dominion Elementary’s veteran Grade 5 teacher, Mrs. Eleanor “Ellie” Thompson, will be hanging up her chalk this Friday, June 6. Known for her vibrant classroom projects and unwavering dedication, Thompson’s retirement marks the end of an era for the tight-knit community.

Thompson first arrived at Dominion Elementary in 1995, fresh out of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Education. Over the years, she became a cornerstone of the school’s literacy and arts programs, spearheading initiatives like the annual autumn art fair and the reading buddy partnership with Dominion High. “Ellie has always gone above and beyond,” said Principal Miranda Collins. “Her creativity and kindness have made our school feel like a second home for countless students.”

Colleagues remember Thompson’s signature bulletin boards—colorful, student-designed collages that transformed hallway walls into storytelling galleries. “If there was ever an assignment that felt like drudgery,” recounted Grade 2 teacher Marcus Levesque, “Ellie would turn it into an adventure—complete with puppets or a classroom play. She showed kids learning could be joyful.”

To celebrate her retirement, family, former students, and fellow staff have organized a school-wide gathering on Thursday at 3 PM in the gymnasium. Current pupils are crafting thank-you cards featuring Thompson’s favorite flowers—sunflowers and daisies—to line the stage. “I still remember her reading us The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” said Grade 5 student Ava MacDonell. “Her voices made us gasp and giggle. I hope she knows how special she is to all of us.”

Mrs. Thompson plans to spend her newfound free time volunteering with the Dominion Literacy Association and exploring local hiking trails with her border collie, Max. In a letter to the community, she wrote, “Teaching here has been the greatest privilege. I will cherish every story, every question, and every laugh we shared.” Longtime residents agree that her legacy—one of compassion, creativity, and community spirit—will continue to inspire Dominion for years to come.
